In a number of applications, most notably on-board control and communications for next generation military and civilian aircraft, single mode fiber optic connections will be the critical link. A variety of companies and agencies are working on developing rugged, reliable single mode optical connectors, capable of being mated and de-mated in hostile environments. By adapting its femtoWrite process, Translume has developed the most promising approach to date. This involves 'writing' an expanded beam within the body of the connector itself, while maintaining it’s single mode operation. Translume is working to develop a commercial product to meet this demand. Initial prototypes are in test.
